Update on Baby Bunnies

I'm so mad! Today I go downstairs to do some laundry and I happen to glace over to the big window we have by the washer and dryer and see the neighborhood black cat follow a baby bunny across the front of our garage. So I run outside and the cat takes off. I capture the little baby in a little plastic bucket and put him back in his nest in the window well. And I find the other 3 babies huddled in one corner looking scared. They are only about 3 inches long and don't think they are ready to be out of the nest yet. Now all I'm going to do is worry about those babies. I think the cat belongs to a neighbor that lives 3 or 4 houses down the street from me. I wish people would keep their cats inside. I do!!

*Another update since I posted a couple of hours ago. The cat must have come back. I was trying to watch for him. There are only 3 babies left now. And I found the baby half eaten in my front yard under the bushes. :( I'm so sad

  1. Hi Tammy....my kitty stays indoors as well....not sure why it's thought to be ok to let kitties roam, it's not good for them....they get dirty with fleas and whatnot plus they can get injured!....I don't think the kitty would hurt the bunny do you?....I sure hope not! Janet

  2. Awww....how sad. We have a lady that has about 10 cats up the street and she lets them roam all day and night. I am so allergic to them, so I sure shoo them away when I can. I am so sorry they got one of your baby bunnies....hope the rest make it okay.

  3. Hi Tammy,

I keep my 3 kitties indoors too for their own good. It's not the cat's fault if people don't keep them in like they should. People need to neuter and otherwise look out for their pets in general. I'm so glad you are looking out for the bunnies though. My heart goes out to them too. I sure want them to be safe from harm. Thank you for the being the good and caring person that you are. Jane

  4. Tammy,
I had outdoor kitties before and they would bring home baby rabbits, I hate it. Now since I lost two cats to coyotes, I will not let mine out and I notice more birds and critters coming to play in the yard.

One year a rabbit made a nest right in the lawn and my son ran over them. Luckily only one got killed and we placed the rest in a new nest, nearby.

This year I did find a bunny that must have been chased and scared into our open shed. It ran into a plastic pipe and must have gotten stuck in it. Felt bad for the poor thing.

  6. oh no that is so sad. :(

We had a cat bring a baby rabbit into our house one day. Thankfully he didn't hurt it and I set it free. (researched online and found out that it was old enough to be without it's mother or else I would not have let it go.) The cat disappeared a few months after we adopted it. He was brought into the shelter as a stray and drove us nuts inside until we finally let him outside. Darn cat would bring in dead mice too, yuck! In fact the baby bunny played dead and at first I thought it was a big dead rat.

  7. We keep our cat, Misty inside. Some people have told us we are cruel for keeping her inside. We live in an area that has cougar, bear, deer, wild turkeys, fox, raccoon, eagles and hawks. There are also some people in our area who might not be kind to animals. Those all could be a hazard to Misty. There are several cats in our neighborhood that visit our home. I've had to put chickenwire in my flowerpots to keep them from digging out my plants and flowers. I also had to put it down in my garden to keep them from using it as a kitty litter box.

I sure hope that your neighbors cat stays away from the bunnies. They are so cute!

  9. Yes, that is sad. I am not a cat owner and we always worried about the baby birds in our yard because of the cats that roamed around. I know it's an instinct for the cat to do that, but it still makes me mad.

  10. Oh that makes me sick. It's so hard to have wildlife with cats around. I've actually "catnapped" a neighbor's cat for a few days when there have been baby birds or whatever trying to fly. Once they're up and going, the cat returns, completely taken care of and fully fed (cat food, not birds). :)
